Hokitika is the capital of the greenstone jade in New Zealand. One of the carvers is Aden. With his own Studio he produces only carvings for the New Zealand market.
Lake Kaniere is just a few minutes drive out of Hokitika. Well I´ve heard that there are some sandflys around. But if you don´t mind them you will have a delightful time. The drive around the lake is manly gravel, nicely tacked away in the bush. Lots of walks to many huts around the place and also short walks to beautiful waterfalls and the shore of the lake. One of New Zealand’s colourful birds are easy to see by the road. The Pukeko is great fun to watch for the whole family.
The west coast is such a powerful place. The waves crash on shore after being miles and miles, roughly 1.400! The energy which gets pushed on shore eats away the manmade lookouts created only since some decades its stars to crumble.
The name of the town Hokitika means freely translated: ´The going by the right path`.
